Getting Started
Coming Soon: A community of adjunct, temporary, and contingent staff discussing issues pertinent to their journies through academe
…sharing the experiences and perceptions of adjunct and contingent staff at the university level. Leslie Wolter and Nicole Hancock opened the discussion in February 2005 with an anthology of essays addressing the experiences and perceptions of contingent faculty. Though drawn together from that beginning, we open the conversation here to anyone who may be looking for a place to exchange ideas about navigating the world of academic in-betweens. Welcome. Every voice makes a contribution.

non-entity indeed! I think it's all very tied to specific departments. Since I teach in dual depts at asingle college, I see very differing levels of inclusion. Clearly, no institutional policy acknowledges the contributions adjuncts make at the school.
Are any of you aware of unionizing efforts, professional associations, or negotiations for health care for adjuncts?
Either I am very lucky in getting great institutions, or my loud mouth attracts attention, but I have had wonderful relationships with teachers and staff at 3 of the four schools where I have taught.
My main complaints have always been lack of input concerning textbooks and need for health insurance.
One further problem concerns recognition. I think that since part time instructors are gradually becoming the mainstay of undergraduate education, institutions should take the opportunity to invite us into their thinking and planning. They want us to teach - sometimes what amounts to a full time load - and never have any say.
